National Centres and Museums

National Planetarium
The planetarium facilities include the Space Theatre, Space Science Exhibition, Resource Centre, Viewing Gallery and Ancient Observatory Park. It is also equipped with a 14-inch telescope and accessories. On display is Arianne IV space engine - one of the engines used to launch MEASAT 1, Malaysia’s first satellite, into space.

National Science Centre
 

Designed in the shape of a cone with its top removed and with the whole structure covered with a huge geodesic dome, the centre is equipped with Intelligent Building Automation System. It has a two-floor exhibition gallery, a multimedia library and a lecture theatre.

National Museum
 

The museum’s palatial building was designed based on classical Malay architecture. It has an impressive collection of artifacts on local history, culture and customs, art and handicraft, economic activities, flora and fauna, weapons and currencies. Outdoor static displays include old locomotives, vintage cars and replicas of ancient Malay palaces.

National Art Gallery
 

The National Art Gallery is housed in a 1932 building which is conserved under the National Heritage Trust.  A permanent collection of works of local and foreign origin are displayed.

Armed Forces Museum
This museum houses a collection of pictures, paintings and exhibits of weapons, uniforms and decorations of the country’s armed forces. Also on display are weapons seized from the communist terrorists, artillery, naval guns and old canons.

Museum of Asian Arts
Located on the grounds of University of Malaya, this museum is a must itinerary for those with a penchant for Asian culture. It contains a fine collection of ceramics from all over Asia.

Bank Negara Money Museum
The Money Museum has an interesting display of old Malaysian currencies, commemorative coins, rare coins and foreign currencies.

Maybank Numismatic Museum
Located in Maybank Tower, it contains a collection of local and regional coins and notes, some dating back to the Malacca Sultanate in the 1400’s.

Kuala Lumpur Textile Museum
The museum showcases the rich heritage of Malaysian arts and crafts, in particular, the local textile industry. Among the interesting exhibits are those on the art of batik making, the weaving of various indigenous materials and a diorama that portrays batik canting and pua weaving.
